Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system, which, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals either alter the experience of pain or release other chemicals that influence the body’s self-regulating systems. These biochemical changes stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

Community Acupuncture is performed in a group setting. Patients remain clothed and relax in a reclining chair while receiving acupuncture. This is an excellent, cost-effective way to reap the benefits of regular acupuncture treatment.

Osteopathy is a manual therapy with a holistic approach that follows the principle of a body
being a dynamic unit of function and emphasizes the interrelationship between the structure and
the function of the body. The osteopathic manual practitioner promotes the body's self-healing
capacity through manual treatment. The treatment goal is to restore proper body mechanics,
nerve impulses, and circulation of the body fluids. By realigning the structures of the body,
improving the mobility of the joints, and releasing the restriction of the fascia, muscles, and
ligaments, the body can restore the proper mechanics allowing it to open the channel of the
nerve impulses and circulation of the body fluids and to reduce muscle and joint pain. The goal
of osteopathy is to find health rather than focus on disease. The Osteopathic manual
practitioner focuses on finding and treating the root cause of the problem leading to the overall
healthy state of each individual.

The discovery of Chinese Medicine came to me on suggestion from a dear friend because of a health issue that would not abate even with the help of conventional medicine. This in itself caused a great deal of frustration and began to take a toll on my emotional well being.

After a few Acupuncture sessions and by taking Chinese Herbs prescribed to me by my Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner together with some dietary changes, I regained my optimal health.

I became very fascinated with my new discovery of TCM and realized that I wanted to know more!

Which brought me to enrolling in the 4 year TCM Practitioner  program at the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver meeting all requirements to successfully complete licensing exams. I am currently registered within BC in good standing with our college board, CTCMA.

I feel deeply passionate and naturally motivated by Chinese Medicine because it just makes sense!

Why?

As a ‘whole’ person, many factors affect our health including environment, our diet; what we put into our body, exercise, emotions, how we handle stress, our genetic background, body constitution, mentality, spirituality, interactions with family, friends, and our community.

TCM regards well-being as a dynamic balance between our internal and external forces.  Imbalance may cause disharmony in our system possibly leading to disease, if not corrected. The goal of TCM is to maintain balance and harmony. TCM taps into our innate healing abilities by means of Acupuncture and Herbs, assisting us back into a state of dynamic balance resulting in our optimal level of well-being.

I am an active coastal mountain woman native to the West Coast of BC who is an avid snowboarder, motorcyclist, hiker, scuba diver, art enthusiast, foodie, fire dancer, and world traveller. I practise yoga and meditation which helps to balance my busy lifestyle and I thrive on nurturing my loving relationships with family, friends, furry companions and the environment! My multifaceted life has lead me to supporting people who suffer from trauma and addiction. A role that comes from the heart and met with utmost compassion.

I made Squamish my home in 2006, and I thrive in this community of abundance and nature.”

Mackenzie knew early on her dream job was to be a Physiotherapist so straight out of High School she moved to the UK to pursue her Bachelors of Physiotherapy degree, graduating in 2017. Since then she has worked in a number of different clinics, in a number of different roles and has grown into a very well rounded Physiotherapist.

Mackenzie is a life-long athlete playing any sport that was available in the small town of Port Alberni where she grew up. Naturally as a repeatedly injured athlete herself she developed an interest in sports injuries and even more so with runners and thus has gained training in running assessment, shoe recommendation & return to run rehab. With experience as a track and field coach, snowboard instructor and playing a large variety of sports she can easily understand how you injured yourself and how to get you back in the action.

In a your first session you can expect her to ask a lot of questions about your injury and your lifestyle. After that you’re in for a postural assessment and a movement assessment. This is where we work out what is going on and causing your pain, dysfunction or imbalance. Assessment is always ongoing and will blend into the treatment portion. Treatment can involve manual stretching, hands on work like massage or myofascial release, IMS / Dry needling and of course a home exercise plan. Movement is the centre of her treatment philosophy so everyone will always be getting at least a little bit of personalized homework.

As a self-proclaimed over explainer Mackenzies goal is to educate you on your injury so you have full understanding of what we are doing and why - so that you can feel involved in your recovery. This is a partnership after all. If you don’t like what we are doing or the exercises I’ve provided - we change it. There’s always other things to try. She also likes to keep things fun and upbeat so don’t be too upset if she makes you laugh a little.

Outside of the clinic you’ll catch her outside whenever possible. You’ll see her face at the climbing crags, snowboarding on the North Shore and Whistler, running or hiking the local trails and paddle-boarding.

Born and raised in Japan, Yuki decided to move to Canada and settled in Whistler as she wished to learn different cultures and stay close to nature, especially the mountains. Her love of snowboarding led her to Whistler and a career as a snowboard instructor. She became one of the most experienced snowboard instructors in Canada. This gave Yuki the opportunity to work as an instructor and be a mentor for the other instructors.

As a sports professional, experiencing several injuries introduced her to manual therapy. She was first introduced to osteopathy in France where she spent some time with her family. Yuki became interested in the holistic approach of osteopathic treatment, considering the body as a whole unit and searching for a root cause of a problem. She was impressed that such a gentle and non-invasive way of treatment can get very effective results. This discovery of osteopathy led her to pursue her journey of becoming an osteopathic manual practitioner.

Yuki studied at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy and holds a Master in Practice Diploma of Osteopathic Manipulative Science (M.OMSc).

Her treatment goal is to work with the patient’s body in a gentle manner so the patient can receive treatment pain-free and in a relaxed way. She believes that when the body is relaxed, the body can receive the treatment more effectively. Yuki uses the anatomical connection of fascia, muscles, ligaments, and bones to deliver the right amount of force to the body to restore alignment, proper range of motion, open nerve channels, and blood flow to induce the body’s self-healing property. She is very excited that now her osteopathic skill set can help many people to maintain or restore health so that they can continue to enjoy life as they like to do.

On her off days, you may see her snowboarding on the mountain in winter, and mountain biking in summer. She loves to travel and discover new cultures from different parts of the world. Her native language is Japanese but she can speak English, French, and Spanish.

Born and raised in Japan, Yuki decided to move to Canada and settled in Whistler as she wished to... Read More
